Ye Elementals
WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTALS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP
TO THE CRAFT?

Elementals are both archetypal concepts and real beings. They pretty much
exist in the Astral Realms, but both manifest on the Physical Plane. Some
people, for example, see fairies, elves, dragons, and such things routinely.
Others do not. And there are some that can see such things at certain times
and/or under certain conditions.

There are traditionally 5 elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit. There is a
lot of confusion a to which directions are "correct" as different traditions place
them in different cardinal points, but since they really don't HAVE a direction,
everybody is correct. In Wicca, the Elements of the 4 quarters (also referred to
as cardinal points or directions) represent the four elements of creation and the
four GUARDIANS of the circle. These Guardians are also helpmates of any work
being done within the circle.

The four elements...

FIRE - Passion

AIR - Inspiration

WATER - Emotion

EARTH - Physical Body

... are also manifestations of differing aspects of ourselves as well as many
other correspondences too numerous to mention here. But, lets take a look at
the elements that the ancients perceived as making up our physical bodies.
FIRE - the heat given off by our bodies. AIR - our breath. WATER - our blood.
EARTH - our flesh and bones. This leads to the understanding that the
elements exist both within us. They are a part of us, and all around us. All are
necessary for completion, creation, and life itself, so in this regard, the
Guardians can also be helpmates to our magickal workings. In Celtic Wicca,
when one Element is called, all are called in order to maintain a balance,
keeping each other in check. Salamanders, or Fire Drakes (The Fire
Elementals) can be particularly bothersome if not handled properly, and can get
rather touchy at times. So who wants to spend time trying to keep one or two
Elemental forces in control when trying to focus upon a ritual, or magickal
working? There is another type of Elemental, the one you can create yourself.
This entity can be created and directed to accomplish certain tasks such as
guarding a specific area, or retrieving information on something or someone.
This is often referred to as a WATCHER. This type of Elemental is made up of
your own energies/substance, and must be reabsorbed as soon as it's assigned
tasks have been completed. If left to wander around on it's own, the Watcher will
become too powerful to control, and may end up acting much like a psychic
vampire, and begin draining you of energy. The Watcher can also become very
troublesome in many other ways, actually about anyway imaginable. Creating
this type of Elemental can be a very good tool to use in certain instances, but as
in all magickal workings, you need to be fully aware of what you are doing, and
why you are taking this type of action, AS WELL AS THE FULL
CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR ACTIONS.

One thing that we are often asked is; "Why can't I do magick that works like
everybody else says they can do?" This question goes well with the above
statement, that you should be aware of the full consequences of your actions
before casting spells.

The full consequences of their actions is what a great number of especially new
Wiccans do not understand, nor do they really take that into consideration
before trying to cast spells. Most are just trying to delude themselves and
everyone else. They think that they should be able to do certain things, and go
to great lengths to convince themselves that they really did DO THAT!!! Heck,
you want to see Dragons?? Just look for them and you will see them
everywhere! In the clouds, in the patterns of vegetation, wall paper, wood grain,
anywhere you care to look, if you REALLY want to see them. But it is still a
cloud, a wall paper pattern, a tree, or a twist in the grain of wood. Not really a
Dragon. But they think that they are seeing Dragons, even though deep down
inside they know better, they refuse to be convinced otherwise. The same with
all the wonders and shitting cucumbers they say they can do magickally. They
KNOW that they did not DO THAT. They really know that they don't know HOW
to DO THAT. But they think they should be able to, and so begin to brag about
all the wonders and walking on water that they have accomplished. And as in
everything in life, if you really have to brag, the only one you are really trying to
convince is yourself.
